The existing art deco building dating back to the 1930s comprises a 3-storey block of flats with 45 two-bedroom units. The flats can be accessed by 8 communal entrances along the front elevations as well as 3 service stairs from the internal courtyard to the rear linked by an open sided deck corridor running along the entire building.
The completed works included the demolition of the existing pitch roof and the construction of a new mansard roof extension comprising nine two-bedroom residential units. As part of the works, a new core and lift were installed at the rear of the building and a new residential access to the flats was added externally.
A particularity of the scheme is the “tent-like” structure consisting in a very lean and efficient primary frame housing the proposed flats. The steel frame was infilled with timber carpentry and clad in clay tiles.
Due to the proximity of the building to major roads and transport routes a combination of Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery with NOx filters and high airtight levels have been specified for the scheme.
